It had started out harmless enough: a peaceful protest in Slateport City in response to the impending meteor disaster. Caleb knew that many Hoenn citizens did not necessarily agree with the League's plan of diverting the meteor to a different dimension; hell, Caleb himself didn't know if he agreed with it. Therefore, it hadn't shocked him when folks had started protesting across a few of Hoenn's major cities.[break][break]
The Ranger Cadet leaned against a bike rack, watching as the crowd of people - many were young university students, he observed, handmade signs in hand - clapped and cheered as speaker after speaker walked up to a makeshift podium in the main square by the entrance to Slateport Mall to rant about dahlia goode and her questionable leadership as of late. League officers patrolled the area, but Tam Fawley had been asked to provide back-up, just in case. Caleb and another Ranger, a newer acquaintance of his, jack wainwright, had been called out to assist.[break][break]
Caleb felt strangely uneasy, despite the late summer afternoon sun and the relatively calm crowd. There was a tension to the air that he couldn't quite pinpoint, the feeling that something fragile was being stretched to its inevitable breaking point. He couldn't help but recall the Kanto Resistance, picturing Ambrose and the others, remembering their anger and resolve. Their effort had been for nothing. Rocket had squashed the uprisings in Kanto as if they were nothing more than annoying pests, never real threats. Which, of course, they hadn't been, in the end. Caleb knew that all too well.[break][break]
He gritted his teeth, pushing those thoughts away, as someone yelled something about The League being okay with causing a genocide. All of a sudden, a loud bang to the north of the pavilion caught Caleb's attention, followed by two more bangs in close succession. He sprang to his feet as people screamed, the crowd surging in several directions as officers rushed forward, trying to find the source of the sound. Gunshots? Or perhaps just firecrackers, to cause chaos? Caleb could not be sure, but he rushed over to jack wainwright, who had not been standing far.[break][break]
"What the hell should we do?" He asked, feeling oddly paralyzed by uncertainty and memories of a painful past.

A heavy sense of unease sat in Jack's stomach like a stone as he scans the mass of people looking for any signs of trouble. Times being what they were, Jack understood why Rangers were being assigned to support at events like these. Still, he dislikes being here and he even sympathizes with why people were protesting. Glancing at Caleb, Jack decides to keep the thoughts to himself; when it came down to it he was still here on assignment. He shakes the thoughts from his head, adjusts his Ranger armband, and begins another wary sweep of the crowd when noise erupts from close by.

By the time Caleb reaches him, the crowd scatters in a chaotic panic. Fear floods the protesters as dropped signs are crushed underfoot while people stampede away from the sounds of the gunshots or explosions or whatever they were, Jack couldn't tell. His eyes widen as he looks at his uncertain partner and his pulse races as his mind goes blank rather than provide a plan of action. A cry of pain snaps him into action as a man falls in the wave of people nearby. Almost reflexively, Jack launches forward in a flurry of elbows and shoulders as he enters the tide of people, hauling the fallen man to his feet.

"Shit, we need to find the Captain," Jack calls to Caleb as the panic continues to spread and people rush for a way out of the situation.

The greatest irony of it all is that when Tam had first become a ranger, he had partly done so because he had thought it to be the kind of job where he wouldn’t have to deal with people all that often. Here he is now; leaning against a tree, smoking a cigarette, and watching a whole bunch of people protest about the actions of more powerful people. Funny how that works, huh?

For a moment there, he’s almost sure this protest will end without issue and he’ll get to go home and take a nice nap, but of course, as Tam should be well aware by now, this is Hoenn, and in Hoenn nothing ever goes as planned.

A shot. Confusion. Chaos.
[break][break]
He’s calm, and he’s also quick to act.
[break][break]
His Falinks is released from its pokéball, and the Ditto that had been on his shoulder slides off to the ground TRANSFORMS into a perfect copy of it. Formation Pokémon are good for controlling and guiding crowds. They know this to be their task. However, Tam still gives them their command, speaking somewhat louder so he can be heard over the commotion while putting out his cigarette:

”Help people get out safely.”

Then, he runs in the direction of the suspicious noise to figure out what the hell is going on, and it’s on his way there that he spots two familiar rangers. Right. He’s not alone in this today. Thank fuck.

”Caleb. Jack. Have your pokémon help everyone get out of here safely. We need to deal with whatever’s going on in there.”

Somehow, he’s still as composed as usual. Typical Tam.

jack wainwright was at Caleb's side in an instant, and as if summoned there by Jack's very next words about needing to find their Captain, Tam Fawley rushed over a moment later and gave them his command. "You got it, Captain," Caleb saluted him, feeling a sudden surge of gratitude for the unwavering sense of calm Tam brought with him wherever he happened to go. Even in the midst of a mass panic, Caleb could tell that Tam was keeping it together better than the average person would; but then again, as much as he tried to appear as such, Tam was far from average.[break][break]
Caleb grabbed two Pokéballs from his waist and released a shining black and blue Umbreon and a particularly fluffy white Zangoose. "Umi, Bara, help people get to safety. Ensure nobody is injured! A crowd this big could lead to folks getting trampled." The Pokémon nodded at their master, and then leapt into action. Umi began weaving in-between panicked protesters, nudging them forward and seeking out anyone who might have tripped and fallen. Bara rushed forward and used her DETECT ability to shield a family who had been shopping nearby from getting run over by a group of fleeing university students. Satisfied, Caleb turned to Jack.[break][break]
"Our Pokémon will be able to handle the crowd. Let's follow Captain Fawley in case he needs back-up." With that, he sprang after Tam.
